So, like I was talking about earlier, here are the rants from my [info]queer_rage post.

Dear friend M,

Just because our friend L dated a girl for a little while in the recent past does not mean she "can't go back to being straight." It doesn't automatically make her a lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual. It means she was curious and experimented. The fact that she has now come out as bi is totally irrelevant. If she still identified as straight, then that would mean that she's straight. What really made me twitch was the fact that you, M, are a lesbian. I know being queer doesn't magically keep one from saying dumb things, but by your logic, the fact that you used to date guys means you cannot now be a lesbian. And I bet you'd be offended if I told you that, right? Please, just think about your words a little next time.

Love,
Me

Dear UM chapter of SAFE,

Where the hell are you? We know you exist because you'll put up a flyer in the English/Foreign Language building with either the day or the time, but never the place. As one of my friends put it, you're harder to find than the Freemasons! There are a bunch of us that would love to join and come to meetings, but you apparently don't want new members. Why?

Confused,
Me

Dear J,

You know, I really like you. We get along really well. We're doing that maybe-dating dance, and it's fun. But. What you said yesterday was not okay. At all. You essentially said "I'm not a homophobe but I think gay stuff is icky and I don't wanna see." How is that not homophobic? What if I replaced homophobe and gay with misogynist and women? Or racist and black? Did you really not realize how offensive that is, especially when you just found out that I'm not straight? I really hope this was some kind of misunderstanding, because you're really nifty otherwise. But I don't want to be friends with a homophobe, and I'm certainly not going to date one!

Hurt and disappointed,
Me

And then, here's my good friend Charity([info]diana_lucifera)'s response to rant number three:

I am disappointed in J. I mean, not very, since I don't actually know him, but he seemed like a cool guy. And that? Not cool. Someone needs to tell him about the rule that says, if you preface anything with "I'm not homophobic/racist/sexist, but," whatever you are about to say probably IS. Also, he doesn't want to see evidence of t3h ghey? LOLOLOL, well, his hanging out with all of us is going to be awkward, huh? And it's an especially suckish thing to say right after he found out that you were pan! I think he needs to look into the reasons behind these "icky" feelings and explore the socialization and internalized homophobia that it stems from. The fact that he hasn't is, frankly, an indicator of just how much privilege he's still blinded by. Hopefully, he will try to overcome it and prove that he's worth a second more of your time. I hope so.

But I don't want to be friends with a homophobe, and I'm certainly not going to date one!

Right on.

So, there you are.
